HAVANA, Cuba - NC State’s Trea Turner and Carlos Rodon helped USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team wrap up its trip with a 5-4 win over Cuba, Monday.

Rodon started and pitched six innings, completing a whirlwind week that saw him travel to New York for the Golden Spikes Award ceremony before rejoining the national team in Havana. The Holly Springs, N.C. native struck out four and held the team of Cuban professionals to three earned on eight hits for a no decision.

After mowing down the side in order in the first, Rodon hit a bump in the second. He struck out the first batter of the inning looking, but gave up a solo shot to left on his first pitch to the next batter. Rodon regrouped and finished the inning with a strikeout and a fly out, bookending a tough luck single that ricocheted off of his leg.

In the third, Rodon opened with a swinging strikeout, then induced an inning-ending double play after a runner reached on a fielding error by USA’s third baseman. Rodon navigated out of a jam in the fourth, getting a pair of line outs after allowing back-to-back singles with one out.

Rodon surrendered two runs in the fifth after a controversial call extended the inning. A lead-off double set the table, and with one out a close play on the runner scrambling back to second forced head coach Dave Serrano out of the dugout to argue. Serrano was ejected on the play, and Cuba scored twice on RBI singles before Rodon finished the inning on a strikeout. Rodon breezed through the sixth in order before leaving the game with USA trailing 3-2.

Turner started at second base and went 1-for-4 with an RBI in the win. The freshman singled in the seventh, an inning that saw USA strand three runners, and drove in a run when he was hit by a pitch during USA’s rally in the eighth.

Team USA returns to action July 14 against Japan at the Honkbal-Haarlem Baseball Week in The Netherlands.
