In May 2004, NC State completed an approximately $6 million renovation of Doak Field, the university's on-campus baseball facility. The renovation of Doak Field was a complete rebuilding of the facility, which first opened in 1966. Phase one of the project included leveling the playing surface, which used to have a severe drop in elevation from home plate to the right-field corner. A new state-of-the-art drainage and irrigation system was installed, and the field then was topped with a new playing surface. Phase two of the project involved replacing the old stadium structure with a new grandstand with all chairback seats; a baseball operations building; a new, modern press box that includes three broadcast booths and seating for up to 40 media members; two concessions stands; and modern, comfortable and spacious rest rooms. The operations building includes locker rooms for the team, coaches and umpires; an equipment room, a players' lounge, coaches' offices, and a reception area. The players locker room is accessible through the home team's dugout. An indoor batting case was erected in the right-field corner, adjacent to the operations building. Because of its size, the new grandstand forced home plate to be moved 15 feet down the third-base line towards left field. The dimensions of the park now are 20 feet shorter down the left-field line, 10 feet shorter in left-center and right-center, and five feet shorter down the right-field line. The left-field fence is 16 feet in height, compared to eight feet throughout the rest of the outfield. Capacity at Doak Field is 2500. The seating bowl is just as close to the action as the old grandstand, and because the seating bowlk is lower in height than the old grandstand, the front-row seats are even closer to the action than ever.
