NC State hosted its alumni game Friday, September 15 at Doak Field at Dail Park, defeating the alumni squad 6-3 behind home runs from Brett Austin and Brian Taylor.
Almost 40 alums turned out for the game, doing their part to ensure that this year's First Annual Alumni Game grows into one of Wolfpack baseball's most prized traditions. Among the NC State greats taking part were Brian Bark, Tony Ellison, Terry Harvey, Corey Lee, Tom Sergio, Brian Ward, Jake Weber, and Tracy Woodson.
Ellison ripped an RBI double to right center in one of the alumni's offensive highlights. Ward, currently an assistant coach for the Pack, turned a triple play in the fifth inning from his station at third base.
"We had an unbelievable turnout," said NC State head coach Elliott Avent. "Both our team and our former players had a great time, and this event's success gives me hope that this becomes a tradition that we can build on. I'm so grateful to our alumni for sacrificing their time and money to make this a fantastic weekend."
The Wolfpack used the opportunity to work out several pitchers. Andrew Woeck, Karl Keglovits, Gianni Zayas, Brad Stone, Jonathon Olczak, Wil Gilbert, and Josh Easley all saw action on the afternoon.
Aside from Austin and Taylor's offensive fireworks, Trea Turner put on an outstanding performance. Turner led off the game by drawing a walk, and promptly stole second and third before scoring on an RBI single to grant the Pack a 1-0 lead. Turner finished the day with three stolen bases.
The connection shared by the current and former Wolfpackers was evident, with the sides exchanging advice and some good-natured ribbing at every opportunity. Players from both teams also enjoyed taking a look at some tentative plans for future facilities and upgrades to Doak Field at Dail Park.
