RALEIGH, N.C. - A crowd of 10,982 turned out to get their first glimpse of the 2011-12 NC State men's basketball team at its Red-White scrimmage on Saturday afternoon following the Wolfpack football team's 13-0 victory over rival North Carolina.
First-year head coach Mark Gottfried put his team through its paces in a three 12-minute periods with squad members switching sides throughout.
"Overall, there were some good things but there were also some things that I wasn't very impressed with," said Gottfried. "We have to get better defensively."
In period one, sophomore Lorenzo Brown and graduate student Alex Johnson led all scorers 10 points each. However it was Johnson's White squad prevailing 26-22. In the second stanza, the trio of junior Richard Howell, freshman Thomas de Thaey and Johnson each chipped in eight points as the White won again by the score of 30-25. Sophmore C.J. Leslie and junior Scott Wood were the high-point men for the Red team with five points apiece. To close out the scrimmage, the White team edged the Red, 30-29, with Leslie's period 14 points and Williams adding 10. The Red team was led by Brown, De Thaey and freshman Tyler Harris with eight points each.
Johnson recorded a team-high 23 points over the three periods while Brown tallied 21 points and Leslie added 19. Leslie also grabbed a scrimmage best 12 boards, while
"Offensively, I think our guys are picking up what we are trying to put in," said Gottfried. "It's a new system and a new style."
NC State hosts Flagler in exhibition play on Monday, Nov. 7. Game time at the RBC Center is 7 p.m. Wolfpack fans attending Monday's game can get in for free if they bring three food items, which will be donated to the North Carolina Food Bank.
