Wolfpack Defeats Long Beach State 76-66
Dec. 7, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game on Saturday, besting Long Beach State by the score of 76-66 at PNC Arena.
Sophomore forward T.J. Warren, the ACC's leading scorer, totaled a game-high 23 points to lead the Wolfpack scoring attack. Freshman guard Anthony 'Cat' Barber added 19 points, while junior guard Desmond Lee scored 15.
Freshman forward Lennard Freeman pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds, besting his previous career-high set in State's last game versus Northwestern.
The Wolfpack (6-2) shot a season-best 86.7 percent from the foul line. Warren reached the 20-point mark for the sixth time this year, while both Barber and Lee each totaled their second-highest scoring output of the season.
"I thought that game was a grinder," NC State head coach Mark Gottfried said. "We did what we needed to do to win. I think once Long Beach gets in their league, they are going to be a pretty good basketball team. I thought in the second half we did a good job at getting into gaps and moving the ball better and we seemed to get into a flow. I thought there was an important stretch where they cut it to two and Cat had some great plays in that stretch. It ignited a run for us that I thought was important. It was a good win for us."
Holding a 36-29 halftime lead the Wolfpack started a 10-3 run, beginning at the 1:54 mark of the first half, to take a 42-33 advantage less than three minutes into the second period. Long Beach State would cut the margin to 50-49 over the next five minutes of play before State embarked on an 11-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game up to that point, 61-51.
A three-point play by Warren, plus back-to-back buckets by freshman forward Kyle Washington off the Wolfpack bench, helped fuel the State run and put some distance between itself and its opponent.
Following the Wolfpack spurt, the 49ers would close within six points on consecutive baskets over a minute long span, before a 13-2 run by State erased any doubt about the final outcome. Barber and Warren combined for 10 of State's points during the deciding stretch to give the Wolfpack a 74-61 lead with two minutes to play.
Dan Jennings led the 49ers (1-9) with 18 points on the afternoon.
State will have a week off for final exams before taking on Detroit at Reynolds Coliseum next Saturday, Dec. 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
