Mark Gottfried To Be Honored At Murray St. Fundraiser
Aug 13, 2013
NC State head men's basketball coach Mark Gottfried will be honored this week at RACERHOOPALOOZA, a fundraiser for Murray State University men's basketball.
The two-day event begins Thursday, Aug. 15 with an evening dinner that will include a "toast" to Gottfried, who coached at Murray State from 1995-98. The dinner will feature Gottfried speaking about his days at the Kentucky school after being introduced by four guest "toasters". The next day, the program includes a scramble golf tournament in Murray, Ky.
More than 40 former Murray State players are expected to attend, including some of Gottfried's former players. Highlighting the current Pack coach's former player list is Marcus Brown, a second round NBA pick in 1996 who was listed as one of the top American players to ever play pro basketball overseas.
Murray State was Gottfried's first head coaching job and was his first stop after his days as an assistant coach at UCLA. He coached the Racers to a 68-24 record and the team made a postseason tournament in each of his three seasons. Gottfried-led Murray State teams earned NCAA tourney berths in 1997 and 1998. The coach's 1997-98 team at MSU posted a 29-4 record.
Gottfried is entering his third season at North Carolina State this fall. Each of his first two teams at NCSU won 24 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
