Men's Basketball Hosts Alumni Gathering
Sept. 15, 2012
RALEIGH, N.C. - Like most reunions there were hugs, big smiles, lots of laugher and tall tales aplenty.
Of course this reunion’s tales were tall for a reason. The storytellers spinning the yarns were all members of special group: former NC State men’s basketball players, coaches and staff members.
For the second consecutive year Wolfpack head coach Mark Gottfried and his wife, Elizabeth, welcomed these alumni that helped build NC State’s proud basketball tradition into their home for an evening of camaraderie on Friday.
“It’s special for a lot of reasons,” Gottfried said. “You’ve got a lot of guys who care deeply about the program and they have a great time getting together and telling stories. For me it’s fun to be a part of it.”
Among the attendees were David Thompson, Lou Pucillo and Julius Hodge – three players who were named ACC Players of the Year during their careers. Also on hand were the likes of Tom Gugliotta, Chucky Brown, Vic Molodet, Tom Burleson, Todd Fuller, Thurl Bailey, Chris Corchiani and Josh Powell, just to name a few of the 75 former Wolfpack players in attendance.
Gottfried organized the event as a means to connect the current program and its staff to its tradition-rich past.
While the gathering is still in its infancy, the basketball alumni have embraced it, as it gives them opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones as they reminisce about their playing days in vivid detail and share a chuckle over experiences from their college days at NC State.
More laughs and memories were exchanged as the players sat down to for a bite to eat.
Following dinner, Director of Athletics Dr. Deborah Yow and Gottfried each spoke to the group, thanking them for their continuing support of the program, updating them on current happenings with program and their goals for NC State in the years to come.
As the evening wrapped up, pictures became the order of business as the players assembled for impromptu team pictures and various other group shots. Members from 1974 and 1983 national championship squads snapped quick group shots. Gottfried roamed the crowd, taking pictures with several of the former players that he has developed strong relationships with in his relatively short time as NC State’s coach.
Be assured that Gottfried who has a deep respect for the traditions of NC State, will ensure that these evenings of tall-tale reunions will be an annual event for years to come.
