SAN JUAN, P.R. – A spot in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off championship game will be on the line when sixth-ranked NC State and Massachusetts meet Friday afternoon at 5 p.m., (ET) at the Coliseo Ruben Rodriguez in Bayamon. Both teams are 2-0 entering the contest.

This will be the fourth meeting between the two programs, with UMass capturing all three previous meetings.

The last time NC State and UMass met was Jan. 2, 2003 in Amherst with the Minutemen posting a 68-56 victory.

Two teams took very different routes to Friday’s semifinal contest.

The Wolfpack advanced to the semifinals with a 72-55 win over Penn State on Thursday, paced by freshmen T.J. Warren and Rodney Purvis. Warren led NC State in both scoring and rebounding, posting 22 points and eight rebounds off the bench, while Purvis added 12, including going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. After trailing early, NC State took command of the game and led by as much as 25 points in the second half.

UMass advanced with a 77-75 victory over Providence in Thursday’s final game. For the second consecutive contest, the Minutemen hit a shot at the buzzer to win when Terrell Vinson tipped in Chaz Williams’ shot in closing seconds of the contest. On Tuesday, UMass’ Sampson Carter knocked down a 3-pointer with a second remaining on the clock to give the Minutemen a 67-64 victory in their season opener against Harvard.

Friday’s contest will be televised on ESPN2 or ESPNU with Jon Sciambi (play-by-play) and Dan Dakich (color analyst). It can also be heard on the NC State radio network with Patrick Kinas handling the play-by-play duties and Neil Solandz providing the color commentary.
