Pack Plays Final Red & White Game at Reynolds

    Nov. 24, 1973

RALEIGH, N.C. It’s not often that a college basketball team that was undefeated last season and is ranked No. 2 in the preseason polls has to take a backseat to a squad from another sport at the same school.

But David Thompson, Tommy Burleson and Monte Towe proudly ceded the spotlight to the NC State football team on Saturday. The gridiron Pack, under the direction of second-year head coach Lou Holtz, won the seventh football championship in school history, thanks to a 52-13 whipping of Wake Forest earlier in the day at Carter Stadium, home of Wolfpack football.

Tailback Willie Burden was the star of the day, winning the ACC rushing crown with his 188-yard rushing performance and becoming the first running back in NC State history to surpass the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He finished with 1,014 yards for the season, beating North Carolina’s Sammy Johnson for the rushing crown by nine yards, as the Wolfpack completed its first unbeaten, untied season in ACC play (8-3 overall, 6-0 ACC).

Quarterback Bruce Shaw also put his name in the history books with his 126 passing yards, to surpass Roman Gabriel’s total of 2,951 career passing yards.

The football Pack has already accepted a bid to the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, where it will likely play Kansas.

On the hardwoods, it was yet another David Thompson exhibition, as the junior All-America scored a game-high 27 points to lead the White team to a 97-79 victory in the final of six warm-up games played around the state. Thompson was relatively cold from the field, but pumped in 11 points from the free-throw line.

Head coach Norm Sloan took his team to Greensboro (site of this year’s NCAA Championship), Rocky Mount, Shelby, Ashville and Charlotte before winding back here to Raleigh.

In the final contest, he again played what appears to be his starting lineup with Thompson and junior Tim Stoddard at the forwards, senior Tommy Burleson at center and juniors Monte Towe and Moe Rivers, a new arrival from the junior college ranks, in the backcourt.

Burleson had his typical outstanding game, with 21 points and 16 rebounds. Towe had eight points, 11 assists and five rebounds, while Rivers chipped in 16 points and five assists.

For the Red team, Steve Nuce had 26 points on 12 of 22 shooting from the field. He also had 12 rebounds. Senior Greg Hawkins, with 14, and freshman Bill Lake, with 11, were the only other Red players to score in double figures.

Now, the Wolfpack sets its sights on its only preseason exhibition game against outside competition when it faces Athletes in Action next Saturday.

“This will be our first opportunity to evaluate the team under actual game conditions,” Sloan said. “Our practice games have been good, but they’re not like playing against outsiders. Saturday’s game will be especially valuable in letting us know how far we have come and how much work we still have to do.”

The Wolfpack opens its season on Wednesday, Dec. 5, against East Carolina.
