RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - Niklas Sade's 48-yard field goal with 33 seconds left lifted NC State past Richmond 23-21 on Saturday night.

N.C. State freshman Bryant Shirreffs accounted for two touchdowns and Pete Thomas was 24 of 31 for 237 yards while helping the Wolfpack (2-0) rally from an 11-point deficit.

"They found a way to win," said head coach Dave Doeren, who now posts a 14-0 record in home games as a head coach. "A lot of teams wouldn't do that. I told our guys I was proud of them. We made plays and a lot of mistakes too. We had 10 penalties tonight, which was disappointing and something we have to correct. But, Richmond is a good football team. They don't make many mistakes which puts pressure on us when we do."

The Wolfpack took over at its own 21 with 1:59 left and Thomas led the squad 48 yards in seven plays.

He completed 4 of 5 passes during the drive for 31 yards - including a critical 13-yard throw to Rashard Smith at the sideline - before things stalled at the 31. Sade's kick from the right hash cleared the crossbar with ease.

"As soon as it left my foot, I looked up, and it was falling right and it went in, said Sade, who left the building following the game still cradling the game ball.  "I take every kick as the game-winning field goal."

Michael Strauss moved the Spiders (1-1) downfield in the final seconds, but his deep heave with no time left was batted down by Hakim Jones just short of the goal line.

The Wolfpack tallied three sacks against the Richmond squad that gave up only five last season.  Carlos Gray, Art Norman and Thomas Teal each got to the Spider QB for sacks.

NC State honored those who serve during the day's Military Appreciation festivities.
