RALEIGH, N.C. - On a day honoring past legends and Super Bowl XLVIII champion Russell Wilson, the NC State football program looked ahead to the future with the playing of the 2014 Kay Yow Spring Game on a sunny Saturday afternoon inside Carter-Finley Stadium.

Though admission was free, a sizable crowd generously donated $16,451.15 as NC State's first-team student athletes (Red) defeated the White team by a final score of 34-0. The donated funds will be split between the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and the Wolfpack Club's Kay Yow Endowment.

Redshirt junior quarterback Jacoby Brissett had a strong outing, completing 24 of 37 passes for 365 yards and two touchdowns. After redshirting during the 2013 season, the University of Florida transfer showed a strong command of NC State's first-team offense, a group which accumulated 449 total yards of offense throughout the game (305 in the first half).

True freshman Bo Hines also had a very impressive outing for Red, catching 10 passes for 132 yards. Bryan Underwood was another frequent target of Brissett's, as he caught three passes for 112 yards and two touchdowns.

"I thought that Jacoby made some nice throws and Bo Hines did some nice things in the first half," said head coach Dave Doeren. "Bryan Underwood had a good day and Tony Creecy made some nice runs. The first-team defense pitched a shutout, as well.

"Thank you to the crowd today. $15,000 raised is a great thing," he added.

A 60-yard completion from Brissett to freshman Bo Hines was one of the key plays of the first half, as it ultimately led to a one-yard touchdown run by redshirt senior Tony Creecy 7:54 into the game to give Red a 7-0 lead. The drive spanned nine plays, 75 yards, and took 3:43 off the clock.

Following the end of the first quarter, NC State took some time to honor Wilson (2008-10) and his stellar NC State career with a jersey patch and a permanent home for his name and number on Carter-Finley Stadium's façade. While with the Wolfpack, Wilson was the first quarterback in league history to earn first-team All-ACC honors as a freshman. He also won the ACC Rookie of the Year award in 2008. He was a two-time Academic All-ACC performer and set an NCAA record for consecutive pass attempts without an interception (379). Wilson ranks in the top three in NC State history in passing yards, pass completions, passing touchdowns, 300-yard passing games, total offense, and touchdown responsibility.

Red would double its lead on the first play of the second quarter, as Creecy scampered 14 yards to the end zone for his second score of the afternoon. This touchdown drive spanned an impressive 15 plays, 80 yards, and lasted 5:25.

With five minutes remaining in the first half, Niklas Sade connected on a 36-yard field goal to make it 17-0 in favor of Red. Just 4:41 later, Red would light up the scoreboard once more when Brissett found senior wide receiver Bryan Underwood in the front corner of the end zone to make it 24-0 at the halftime break.

At the half, NC State honored the Wolfpack alumni in attendance and the 1968 Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) championship team. At various points throughout the game, State also honored 2014 Super Bowl participants Nate Irving, and J.R. Sweezy.

Brissett found Underwood once again on the first snap of the fourth quarter, leading the receiver down the right sideline with a perfectly thrown ball. Underwood caught the pass and ran the remaining length of the field on a 72-yard scoring play.

Sade would score the final points of the afternoon, connecting on a 42-yard field goal as time expired to put the final count at 34-0 in favor of the first-team student athletes.

NC State will open the 2014 football season at home on Aug. 30 against Georgia Southern. The game will serve as Wolfpack Club Day and the kickoff time is to be determined.
