Dowdy Ready to Contribute

Raleigh, N.C. - After anxiously awaiting his chance to contribute, redshirt junior Rickey Dowdy has the opportunity to get on the field and make his mark this season.
Dowdy is the projected starter at weakside linebacker, a position that has been one of great strength in recent seasons for the Pack.
"I'm real excited about being the starter at weakside linebacker," Dowdy said. "Camp has been going well and we're out here progressing, getting better everyday preparing for Tennessee."
The NC State linebacker has played sparingly during his career, but is prepared for the fast pace of college football from the skills he has gained in practice.
"Practice over the past years has helped me a lot, looking at the older guys and seeing what they did to be successful," said Dowdy. "I want to mimic what they did and hopefully I will be just as successful."
As a senior at High Point Central High School in 2008, Dowdy recorded 105 tackles, 17 sacks, 10 tackles for loss, while grabbing two interceptions.
"Being that I was mainly a pass rusher in high school, I bring that ability and the versatility of being able to run down plays," Dowdy said of what he brings to the linebacking core.
The redshirt junior's ability to make plays will be tested early in the season when the Wolfpack opens against Tennessee.
Fortunately for Dowdy, he had the opportunity to learn valuable knowledge from the linebackers that were playing ahead of him during his three years in the program.
"I really learned almost everything I know now from the guys that played ahead of me," Dowdy said.
Dowdy has learned the defense, watched countless hours of film, and practiced hard each day in anticipation of his first college start.
Replacing the three starters from last season will be a difficult task, but the trio is well aware of the expectation of fans and the pressure that may accompany it.
"There's always pressure just for me and the standards I set for myself," said Dowdy. "I've been put in a good position to contribute and that's what I'm going to do for my team."
Lucas is the defensive captain and the leader of the bunch, but Dowdy knows that everyone has the same role to be a leader and communicate when they are on the field.
When asked what fans can expect to see from him this season, Dowdy simply said "A linebacker that's going to make plays to help his team win."
