Amerson Named Finalist for Thorpe Award
Nov. 21, 2011
Raleigh, N.C. -
NC State sophomore cornerback David Amerson has been named a finalist for the 2011 Jim Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the top defensive back in college football. Amerson leads the FBS ranks with 11 interceptions this season, four more than any other player in that division. He actually has picked off more passes in 2011 than 82 FBS teams.
"David has had a phenomenal year and is very deserving of this honor," said NC State head coach Tom O'Brien. "To be a finalist for such a prestigious award as a sophomore is a real testament to his performance this season."
Last week in the Wolfpack's win over No. 7 Clemson, Amerson tied the ACC single-season record that was set 15 years ago by UNC's Dre Bly. He is one pick from ranking in the top 10 in NCAA-FBS history.
Earlier this season, the Greensboro native broke the NC State single-season mark that had stood since 1938. Amerson has picked off a pair of passes in three different contests and returned one for a touchdown in the win at Virginia.
The presentation of the Thorpe Award will be featured on The Home Depot College Football Awards live on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
