Dec. 2, 2001
Raleigh, N.C. - NC State has accepted a bid to play the University of Pittsburgh in the 38th Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl. The game will be played on December 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Orlando, Fla.
"This is a great opportunity for our players, our fans and for everyone associated with North Carolina State University," said Amato on Sunday. "Our team is very excited about having the chance to complete what has been a great season at a great bowl."
The game will be televised by ESPN, with Lee Corso, Kirk Herbstreit and Mike Tirico calling the action. The contest will also be broadcast by Pacific West Radio.
"The NC State Wolfpack family is tremendously excited about the potential to attend the Visit Florida Tangerine Bowl," said NC State Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. "Our fans and supporters from across the state and nation are solidly behind Coach Chuck Amato, his staff and our exciting football team. An invitation to the Florida Tangerine Bowl is an early holiday present for thousands of NC State Wolfpack fans."
The game will mark the rematch of the 1978 Tangerine Bowl when the Wolfpack defeated No. 16 Pittsburgh, 30-17. That day, NC State's all-time leading rusher, Ted Brown, was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player, carrying the ball 28 times for 126 yards including a score in his last game in a NC State uniform. Chuck Amato was the defensive coordinator for the Wolfpack that season.
