March 15, 2014
STATESBORO, Ga. – Following the first two rounds of play at the prestigious 2014 Chris Schenkel Invitational, the NC State men’s golf team currently ranks 10th with a two-round team score of 585 (+9).
Redshirt freshman Stanhope Johnson had his second straight impressive day at the competition, following his first-round 70 with a 71 (-1) on Saturday. Johnson currently ranks tied for 12th in the field of 90 golfers with a two-round score of 141 (-3).
“This course (the Forest Heights Country Club) requires you to hit the greens if you want to score well,” Johnson said. “If you miss the greens here, you are likely to hit a bogey or worse. My ball striking has been great this week, giving me great looks at birdies.
“This has been the best ball striking performance I’ve had all season,” he added.
As a team, the Wolfpack followed up its first-round score of 292 with a 293 (+5) on Saturday. State ranks ahead of Kentucky, Florida, ACC foes Duke and Maryland, and North Texas at the competition.
James Chapman (T73) and David Cooke (T80) rounded out the Pack’s day of competition on Saturday, shooting scores of 78 and 73, respectively. Chapman is at 153 (+9) strokes through two rounds and Cooke is at 155 (+11).
The Wolfpack will play its final round at the tournament with a shotgun start beginning at 8:30 a.m. Sunday.
