CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The UNC Finley Golf Course was no match for NC State junior All-American Albin Choi this weekend as he won his season-opening event by six strokes at the Tar Heel Intercollegiate for his fifth collegiate victory.
Choi, from Toronto, shot a third round 4-under 68 on Sunday to finish at 11-under 205 - two shots off his best collegiate 54-hole score that he has recorded on two occasions, including his 2012 NCAA Regional victory in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Sunday’s round had six birdies against just two bogeys. Choi came up with 17 birdies and was never worse than bogey during the two-day event. Her birdied the par-3 12th hole three times.
The five career victories by Choi ties him with Tim Clark and Nolan Mills for second in program history, five shy of Matt Hill’s victory total of 10.
The Wolfpack, who led after the first round at 6-under 282, finished fourth at 10-over 874. Duke won at 8-under 856, followed by North Carolina (862) and Charlotte (873).
Freshman Stanhope Johnson finished tied for 17th in his collegiate debut for the Wolfpack. He opened with a 4-under 68 during Saturday’s morning round, and was steady on Sunday with a 1-over 73 to finish at 2-over 218.
Senior Mitch Sutton put together an even-par round of 72 on Sunday to finish tied for 27th at 5-over 221.
Senior Hunter Howell and sophomore Andrew Decker placed in a tie for 73rd at 18-over 234.
Playing as individuals, freshmen Carter Page and Chad Cox finished tied for 62nd and 71st respectively at 12-over 228 and 17-over 233.
NC State will compete next a little less than a month from now at Duke’s Rod Myers Invitational in Durham, N.C. Choi won that event in 2010 during his freshman campaign.
