JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. – NC State men’s golf battled a windy course Friday and owns a commanding 8-shot lead as the only team under par after day one of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at Blackthorn Club.
Senior Mark McMillen is at the top of the individual leader board after a 4-under 68 on Friday, two shots clear of the 82-man field.
The Smithfield, N.C., native tied his career-low round with six birdies on the day, against just two bogeys.
Sophomore Albin Choi finds himself tied for fifth after an even-par 72. Starting at No. 10, Choi bogeyed the first three holes of the day and was at 2-over 38 at the turn. But he made three birdies on his final nine holes to salvage the day.
The Wolfpack will begin Saturday’s second round eight shots clear of No. 9 Virginia. All together, NC State leads a field that includes six ranked clubs, including No. 10 Clemson that struggled to a 25-over 313 and is tied for 13th with East Tennessee State and Army.
Senior Chad Day is one shot behind Choi at 1-over 73. He had four birdies today, including three on his first nine holes.
Classmate Graham Baillargeon is at 2-over 74, and freshman Andrew Decker is at 3-over 75.
