Hill Wins Again; No. 14 Pack Finishes 2nd
STATESBORO, Ga. For the second straight tournament, NC State sophomore Matt Hill has brought home first place honors. This weekend, Hill won individual medallist honors at the 2009 Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational in Statesboro, Ga. Hill finished the three rounds at 7-under (209) and won by a comfortable three strokes.
Coming into the final round tied for the lead with two other golfers, Hill had the second-lowest round of any golfer. In Sunday’s round, Hill shot a three-under (69). He tallied five birdies on the day, but it was his performance on the back-nine which won him the tournament.
Hill carded a three-under on the final nine holes of the day, with four birdies. While holding a slight lead going into hole No. 16, Hill registered birdies on two of the final three holes to give him the insurmountable lead and his second tournament win in as many weekends the Pack has been in action.
Hill has now claimed four career victories in his first 18 tournaments of his NC State career, and has three this season. His first victory came at last year’s Hootie at Bulls Bay, and Hill also claimed top honors at the Hawks Invitational this past fall and at the General Hackler Tournament earlier in March.
Hill has now tied a school record, as he is one of only two golfers in Wolfpack history to win three tournaments in one school year, Kelly Mitchum did so in 1990-91. He is also now tied for second in school history with four career titles, only behind current PGA Tour member Tim Clark’s five.
No. 14 NC State as a team finished in a tie for second place at three-over (867). The Pack improved each day, shooting a 295 in the first round, then a 287 yesterday, and closing with today’s three-under (285). The Pack’s round today was the lowest among all teams in the final round.
South Carolina brought home the team title, besting NC State and Tennessee by two strokes finishing at one-over (865).
Senior Darren Blair also had a strong showing this weekend for the Pack, as he was in the top-five for all three rounds. Blair finished in fourth place at two-under (214). In today’s final round, Blair shot an even-par (72) for the second straight day.
Sophomore Brandon Detweiler had a six shot improvement from yesterday’s second round. Detweiler shot a three-under (69) in final round action, and finished the tournament at five-over (221). In Sunday action, Detweiler holed a total of five birdies, including a stretch of four on five holes on the front-nine as he went into the turn at two-under.
Junior Brade Revell finished the weekend at 10-over (226), while senior Andrew Byrd was at 12-over (228).
The Pack returns to action next weekend at the Hootie at Bulls Bay in Anandaw, S.C., a tournament NC State won last year and Hill’s first career individual title as well.
