Men's Golf Dominates 1st Two Rounds at River Landing Intercollegiate
WALLACE, N.C. After two rounds of action on Friday, the host NC State men’s golf team holds a commanding seven stroke lead at the 2009 River Landing Intercollegiate being played this weekend at Wallace, N.C. The Wolfpack is currently at 10-under (563), after shooting a round of 13-under (278) in the morning and then a three-under (285) in second round action.
Duke is currently in second place at six-under (570), and Wake Forest is third at two-under (574).
NC State sophomore Matt Hill holds the individual lead after two rounds, as he holds a one stroke lead entering tomorrow’s final round. Hill finished Friday at six-under (138).
Hill shot a five-under (67) in the first round of action. He had a team-high eight birdies in that round, and was at five-under after the first nine holes. In the second round, Hill finished at one-under (71), with an eagle on the par-five No. 5 to go along with three birdies.
The Pack also has a pair of golfers tied for third place after the two rounds, as senior Darren Blair and junior Brad Revell each stand at four-under (140). Both Pack golfers shot a three-under (69) in the first round, followed by a one-under (71) in the second round.
Blair had five birdies in the early session, and had another pair in the second round in addition to an eagle on the par-five No. 13. Revell had seven birdies on his first 18 holes of the day, and shot a four-under on the final nine holes of the first round, and in the second round he had three birdies on the back-nine.
Sophomore Brandon Detweiler finished Friday’s two rounds at three-over (146). In the first round, Detweiler finished at three-over (75), but improved in the second round and carded an even-par (72). In his second round, Detweiler had just one hole over par.
Senior Andrew Byrd is at 12-over (156), after a one-over (73) in the first round and was at 11-over (83) in the second round.
NC State also has five members competing as individuals, two of which are in the top-10 in the individual standings.
Junior Kent Copeland is in eighth place overall at two-under (142). He used four birdies in the first round for a round of one-under (71), and matched that score in the second round while adding five birdies.
Sophomore Chad Day is in 10th place at one-under (141). Day finished the first round at two-over (74), but improved five strokes and shot a three-under (69) in the afternoon round. In that second round, Day had seven birdies, and shot a three under on the front-nine.
Duke’s Matthew Pierce is sandwiched between the Pack’s top three players, and is one stroke off the lead at five-under (139).
Final round action will start at 7:30 tomorrow morning.
