Richardson Claims Second NC Amateur Crown
Raleigh, N.C. - Former NC State men’s golfer Jerry Richardson won his second North Carolina Amateur golf title in three years this past Sunday in a three-player, three-hole playoff at Starmount Forest Country Club.
Richardson, 22, sank a six-foot birdie putt to beat Cliff Benson of Raleigh and Barden Barry of Kinston after the trio tied with 272 totals. All three competitors shot closing 68s on the fabled par-71 layout that hosted many Greater Greensboro Opens.
Three more players finished one shot back in fourth place with 273 totals: Andrew Westmoreland of Greensboro, third-round leader Chris Eaves of Burgaw and Will Collins of Salisbury.
"This one is sweeter," Richardson noted. "I'm a better player than I was two years ago, and this was a tougher last day." Competitive it was. At one point on the back nine, Richardson was tied with five other players for the lead.
Richardson has completed his golf eligibility at North Carolina State University but will return to school in the fall to complete his degree. "I plan to play some golf between now and then," he said.
The top 30 finishers and ties are exempt into the 2008 North Carolina Amateur championship, which is conducted by the Carolinas Golf Association.
