Sanchez Wins Cabarrus Open
Sept. 29, 2005
CONCORD, N.C. (TarheelTour.com) - David Sanchez, a former NC State golfer, won the Tarheel Professional Golf Tour's Cabarrus Open on Thursday, earning a $9,000 paycheck. Sanchez, a Charlotte native, shot a final round 66 in wind conditions more native to Scotland than Concord.
Long regarded as one of the best players on Tour not to have won, Sanchez said he tried not to think of that on the back nine: "I didn't look at the scoreboard all day. I really just wanted to treat it like a normal round." The former Wolfpack All-American was in or around the lead all day, but when a devilish 40 foot birdie putt dropped on 17, he knew he had the cushion he needed going to the last.
"It's just a great feeling of relief to finally win out here and know that I can bring my best stuff in the final round," said Sanchez, who will enter the first stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School in three weeks.
Another former NC State player who did well in the evemt was Chris Mundorf, who set a new tournament course record with a second round 63, and finished tied for fifth place, pocketing $1,750. Fernando Mechereffe, who finished six strokes under par and Justin Walters, who finished one under also played for the Wolfpack.
The Tarheel Tour visits venerable Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, NC next week for the inaugural Big Stakes Classic. For more information, including complete results from the Cabarrus Open, visit www.tarheeltour.com.
