WILMINGTON, N.C. - NC State soccer looked sharp in its lone exhibition before the 2012 season, dispatching UNC Wilmington 3-1 on the Seahawks’ home turf Saturday night.
Nazmi Albadawi dished a pair of assists in the contest, the first to Monbo Bokar in the 26th minute to hand the Wolfpack a lead it would never surrender. Alex Martinez scored the second goal in the 38th minute, also assisted by Albadawi.
“I’m very pleased with the game, and thought we got better as it went on,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “It was great to see Monbo on the scoring sheet, and Alex getting a goal in first game for us. We showed a very disciplined, focused effort. We’re excited to play our next game.”
Robert Beatty scored in the 78th minute to stretch the Pack lead to 3-0, unassisted on a strike from the left side of the box to the inside right post. UNCW responded in the 86th minute with a goal by Joel Perrell to set the final at 3-1.
Fabian Otte spent 45 minutes in goal for State with two saves and no goals allowed. Joe Mills replaced him with nearly 35 minutes of work, holding the Seahawks scoreless and denying two shots.
“All three keepers played, Fabian made an excellent save early in the game that could have had us behind 1-0,” said Findley. “It’s great to have him back in goal after injury. Joe was excellent tonight. They both did they’re job well in all aspects. We’re lucky to have both a great goalkeeping coach and the personnel to go with it.”
State battled for a 2-0 lead at the half, thanks to a pair of assists from Albadawi. Bokar granted the Wolfpack its 1-0 advantage in the 26th minute, beating a back line trap to score on a through ball from midfield.
UNCW looked to respond, but Otte denied the equalizer with his second save of the half. Six minutes later, Martinez found the back of the net to push the Pack ahead 2-0. Albadawi provided the assist once again, setting up a strike from the right wing that slipped under the crossbar.
“I was pleased to see some young guys step up and take their chance tonight,” said Findley. “Everyone employed the tactics we’ve been training toward, those improvements are very encouraging. It’s important to get better every day as we move forward. These guys are commited, we’re seeing it already.”
