NC State men's soccer earned its second clean sheet in a row, blanking Campbell 2-0 thanks to goals from Michael Bajza and Matt Ingram, as 1,630 fans turned up for the Wolfpack's lone home exhibition ahead of the 2014 season.
"I was pleased with the first half in particular," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "It's been a long preseason. Even though it's short, it's been very intense. We used this as a training game, running guys for 35-40 minutes, then rotated a couple more groups into the match.
"Campbell's always very difficult to play against, Steve does a great job organizing them, and they always want to beat us. It was a tough game, and a good one to help our boys prepare."
MOMENTS OF THE MATCH
Zach Knudson forced the issue early for the Wolfpack offense, making several deep runs into enemy territory during the opening stretch. In the 34th minute, Knudson drew a penalty in the box, setting up Michael Bajza's PK to grant the Pack a 1-0 lead.
After taking that lead to the break, the Wolfpack defense proved up to the task. In the 54th minute, a breakaway led to a fantastic Marius Heislitz save, but the rebound stayed in the box, setting up a header toward an open net. Seth Poole managed to plant himself in the middle of the net, and chest down the oncoming header to preserve NC State's 1-0 lead.
Matt Ingram finished the deed for State, sending a rocketed volley to the left post in the 81st minute. Ingram's strike was assisted by Michael Hinkson and Andrew Malinich, who scrambled into a congested box to win the ball from Campbell defenders.
