MOMENT OF THE MATCH
State scored its quickest goal of the preseason, grabbing a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a Nick Surkamp breakaway deposited into the top right corner. Surkamp would take the Pack's first three shots. The Wolfpack would have to wait until the 88th minute before it's next chance, created by Zach Knudson.
With the offense struggling, NC State's defense rose to the challenge by turning away each Elon attack. Goalkeeper Alex McCauley recorded three saves as the Phoenix outshot State 9-4, and 7-1 on corners. Essentially, the Pack didn't play well, and won. NC State head coach Kelly Findley took that as an encouraging sign.
COMMENTS FROM FINDLEY
"My quote to the team after the game was I'm not pleased with our process," said Findley, "but I told them that being able to win even when everything isn't clicking is a sign of a very good team. We made it through the preseason injury-free, and we're fresh for our home opener next Friday."
"Nick took his chance really well," said Findley referring to Surkamp's game-winner. "Scoring goals is what forwards do, and it was a great opportunity for Nick, one that he took confidently. We had several other opportunities to set up things that just missed connecting. We'll work to improve on those."
"We have young players that are stepping into some vital roles. Knudson and Ryan Peterson played well again, Ade Taiwo was a handful tonight, Conor Donovan was wonderful, Caleb Duvernay got time as freshman. Our guys have used this preseason productively."
