LYNCHBURG, Va. - NC State opened the season in style Friday night, scoring a 2-0 road win over Liberty behind a shutout from Fabian Otte, goals by Nazmi Albadawi and Monbo Bokar, and an assist by Alex Martinez.
The Wolfpack (1-0) improves to 1-0-1 in season openers under head coach Kelly Findley, and has not lost the first game of a season since 2005.
"It's huge to play on the road the first time out, and come away with a shutout against a very hard working, competitive Liberty team," said Findley. "That kind of performance is exactly what we're after. We chose this game because we want to play to a great standard regardless of being home or away, rain or clear weather."
Albadawi broke a scoreless tie in the 44th minute with the Pack's first goal of 2012. Conor Agnew won a ball off of a punt, and Albadawi managed to run under it to finish from the top of the box. State closed out the half with that 1-0 lead.
In the second, the Wolfpack played with a one-goal advantage until the 71st minute, when Bokar sealed the outcome with his first goal of the year. Martinez beat a pair of defenders, then pulled a pass back to Bokar, who finished on an empty net.
"It was great to see Nazmi and Monbo get off the mark," said Findley. "The back four's performance was really sharp as well. [Liberty] only had one really good chance in the game, which speaks to how our defense handled the challenge. The end result is that Fabian came up with his first shutout of the year, another positive."
NC State returns to action Sunday when the Wolfpack hosts Mercer in its home opener, 4 p.m. at Dail Soccer Field. Streaming video will be provided by GoPack All-Access, fans can follow Twitter updates from @PackMensSoccer, and live stats will be available on GoPack.com.
"Obviously, it's great to get off to a good start, sticking to our tasks, and showing discipline," said Findley. "But we're only as good as our next game. We have to prepare for Sunday now."
