In its final exhibition before the 2013 regular season, NC State played UNC Wilmington to a 1-1 draw, Saturday night at Dail Soccer Stadium.
“It was a fast paced beginning to the game,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “We did a good job getting on top of the game, and finished the half well. [UNCW]’s a good team, they’re really tough to play against. We had plenty of chances to finish off the game though, and that’s frustrating.”
Junior transfer Clement Simonin provided the Wolfpack’s lone goal of the evening, scored in the 38th minute. Alex Martinez started the play with a quick corner to Gbenga Makinde. Makinde sent a cross to the far post, where Simonin met it with a header to take a 1-0 lead.
State maintained possession for much of the early going in the second half, but the Seahawks broke through in the 84th minute on a free kick. Mateo Cardona did the deed, sneaking a free kick inside the far post from just outside the far corner of the Wolfpack box.
“Some guys played really well, we had some great moments,” said Findley. “We’re a little bit too up and down right now, we need to see some consistency in our performance. There are a lot of tough games in college soccer, so we have to learn how to play up 1-0 or down 1-0. I thought we got a little bit rattled tonight, and that’s something we have to grow from.”
The exhibition setting meant no overtime on the evening, both sides agreed to a tie at the end of regulation.
NC State returns to the pitch on August 30 at Campbell for the regular season opener at 7 p.m. The Pack plays its first home game on September 6 against Pittsburgh.
