BUIES CREEK, N.C. - NC State opened its 2013 campaign with a 2-0 win at Campbell, led by Fabian Otte's five-save shutout and goals from newcomers Davi Ramos and Clement Simonin.
"I'm very pleased with the performance tonight," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "We came to a difficult place to play, and got a result early in the year. I'm most pleased with our composure, our discipline, and the way we stuck to our game plan to claim a shutout."
The Pack (1-0) landed the first two shots on goal of the match, but had to wait until the waning moments of the first half to take a lead.
The sequence began in the 41st minute with Matt Ingram leading a counter attack up the right side, passing it forward to Ramos before a deflection set up a Wolfpack throw-in.
State worked for a free kick that the Campbell (0-1) defense sent over the end line, kicking off a string of four Wolfpack corners in a row. The last went headed over the crossbar to switch possession, but the Pack kept the pressure on by winning the goal kick at midfield.
From there, another Camel foul set up a free kick in the 45th minute that Nazmi Albadawi played quickly to Alex Martinez. Martinez dished a pass to the right side of the box for Ramos, who deposited his first career goal into the right half of the net for a 1-0 halftime lead. Martinez and Albadawi earned assists on the play.
The second half opened with a flurry of action, and the Pack took advantage of the tempo. In the 55th minute, Martinez navigated through a Campbell double team, worked a give-and-go with Nick Surkamp, and hunted the ball down deep in Camel territory before drawing a foul.
Danny DiPrima took the free kick from the left side, crossing it to Simonin on the far post for a header to make it 2-0. The goal represents the first for Simonin in Wolfpack red. The junior transfer from Lorient, France scored once in the Wolfpack's exhibition with UNCW. DiPrima claimed his first assist of the year.
Otte cashed in his ninth career shutout with five saves on the evening. State outshot Campbell 14-12 with seven on goal. The Pack also earned 10 corners on the night to three for the Camels.
NC State returns to action with its home opener and ACC opener against Pittsburgh on September 6 at Dail Soccer Stadium. Beginning at 7 p.m., the match will be streamed live on GoPack All-Access. Fans can also follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or on Twitter via @PackMensSoccer.
