RALEIGH, N.C. - No. 20 NC State soccer won its sixth-consecutive game Sunday at Dail Soccer Stadium, cruising to a 3-1 win over Marist behind goals from Conor Agnew, Alex Martinez, and Monbo Bokar.
The Wolfpack (6-0) has pieced together the program's best start since 1982, surpassing a five game season-opening win streak compiled by the 1987 squad.
Agnew opened the scoring in the 16th minute with his first career goal. Jonathan Ray came away with his third assist of the season, sending a pass across the goal to set up Agnew with an empty net opportunity.
Marist (2-3) pressed the issue in response, and broke through in the 29th minute when Evan Southworth scored on a header from Matty Berman's free kick to the far post.
Before the dust could settle from Marist's score, State responded with one of its best goals of the year. Matt Ingram touched a cross toward Martinez on the right half. Martinez danced free of his defender before ripping a wild shot that hooked into the top left corner of the goal. The score marks Martinez's team-leading fifth of the season. Ingram's assist is his first of the year.
The Wolfpack enjoyed a 2-1 halftime lead, but its defense would be tested early and often in the second half. Marist forced the ball into Pack territory several times, but more often than not, the Pack's back line would poke it free before the Red Foxes could muster a shot. Marist ended the contest with only two shots on goal, as Joe Mills smothered the Foxes only other chance.
In the 85th minute, Bokar sealed the deal after some crisp passing from Danny DiPrima and Ryan Metts. Metts set the play up, and DiPrima tipped it toward Bokar for the game-clinching strike from the top of the box. The goal marks Bokar's third of the year, DiPrima's assist is his third, and Metts notches his first point of the season.
NC State returns to action Friday, September 14 for an ESPN3 game against Maryland. Kick off time for that contest is slated for 7 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium.
