Men's Soccer Downs Gardner-Webb
Sept. 10, 2003
Raleigh, N.C. - For the second time this season, the NC State men's soccer team came from behind and pulled out the victory, this time against Gardner-Webb 3-2 Wednesday afternoon at SAS Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack (2-2) was down by a goal in each half to the visiting Bulldogs (1-1), but the Wolfpack scored the final two goals of the day to even its record for the season.
Gardner-Webb stuck first, when they were awarded a free kick right outside the Wolfpack penalty box. Brian Wentzel took the kick and beat NCSU keeper Jorge Gonzalez to give the Bulldogs the early lead in the eighth. NC State would even up the score, when sophomore John Queeley connected on his own free kick 25 yards out at the 29:25 mark. The teams would stay tied 1-1 through the half.
The Bulldogs would again build a one goal lead in the 52nd minute. Henry Fossung took a long pass from Sergio Lozano and tucked the ball under Gonzalez who came out of the net to challenge. NC State would then score the final two goals of the day. Junior Martin Cini netted his second goal of the season in the 54th minute after taking a pass from sophomore Aaron King inside the penalty box to tie the score. Freshman Kevin Averette would then score the game winner at the 69:11 mark after receiving a cross from sophomore Bryant Salter.
NC State's Gonzalez finished the day with seven saves, with the Wolfpack outshooting the Bulldogs 16-12. The game was a physical battle as well, as the two teams combined for 32 fouls and seven yellow cards.
NC State will return to action this Sunday with the first ACC game of the season, at No. 1 Maryland at 2:00 p.m.
