RALEIGH, N.C. - Boosted by goals from Conor Agnew and Alex Martinez, NC State soccer dispatched Adelphi 2-0, Tuesday at Dail Soccer Field.
“We’ve had a tough spell lately,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “Oftentimes that can keep a team from coming out sharp. We did a good job tonight of responding to a great start by our opponent. I’m pleased that we were able to record the shutout, because these midweek games can be tough. For us to come away with two goals and a shutout shows a disciplined performance.”
The Wolfpack (9-7) had its work cut out in the early going, as Adelphi generated a few chances during the first half. The Panthers (2-13) took the first three shots of the game, but the score remained 0-0 until the 36th minute.
Agnew broke the scoreless tie with his second goal of the season, set up by an Alex Martinez free kick from the right side of the field. Martinez send a cross to the far side, which Agnew headed in toward the left post.
After heading to the locker room with a 1-0 advantage, the Pack sealed the game early in the second frame. Martinez scored his ninth goal of the year against an empty net in the 49th minute. Nazmi Albadawi served up a pass from midfield. Martinez collected the ball beyond the last line of defense, and beat the goalkeeper to extend the State lead to 2-0.
The goal and assist pushes Martinez’s point total to 25 on the year, in contention for the conference lead. Albadawi’s assist represents his fourth, the second since returning from injury.
State salted away the remainder of the game by dominating possession, but goalkeeper Fabian Otte did have to withstand a few Panther attacks along the way. Otte finished the night with four saves to record his third shutout of the year.
