RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State braved the elements Monday night at Dail Soccer Field to outlast VMI 3-2 behind goals from Nazmi Albadawi, Alex Martinez, and Moritz Steidten.
Both sides faced temperatures in the low 40s, high winds, and steady rain on Monday night. While all of that weather played a factor, the wind made the largest impression. In the first half, State (10-8) built a 3-0 lead playing with the wind, then nearly surrendered that lead after switching sides for the second half. VMI (2-13-1) scored twice, but couldn't find the equalizing goal over the final five minutes.
"Conditions obviously played a factor tonight," said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. "I'm pleased that we could battle through the weather to get a win midweek. We're excited to start preparing for Virginia, and hope to build on tonight as we look forward to finishing strong this season."
Albadawi set the tone for NC State, depositing his third goal of the season in the 12th minute. Danny DiPrima started the play with a corner. The ball deflected backward off of Matt Ingram, and Albadawi moved into position for a scoring strike from the top of the box. Ingram and DiPrima each earned credit for assists on the play.
Only six minutes later, Martinez picked up his 10th goal of the year. Martinez weaved his way through traffic at the end of a long run, and pulled up from 20 yards to extend the Wolfpack lead to 2-0.
Before the dust had settled from that score, Steidten notched his first of the year to make the lead 3-0. Martinez claimed the assist on a free kick saved by the VMI goalkeeper. Steidten rushed in for the rebound, and slipped a goal into the left side of the net.
The Pack outshot VMI 7-2 in the first half on its way to a 3-0 lead, but the weather made its mark as the teams switched ends for the second half. In the 60th minute, Zaher Shihata scored his first goal of the season on a through ball from Aaron White. Shihata collected the pass and scored in a one-on-one situation to trim the lead to 3-1.
State managed to regroup over the next 24 minutes, until the Keydets made things interesting with a second goal. Kyle Farmer received a long ball over the top in the 85th minute, and finished the one-on-one to chop the lead to 3-2.
The Wolfpack defense withstood a number of attacks over the final five minutes to seal the win. In the 86th minute, Seth Poole blocked a shot inside of 10 yards, denying VMI's best chance to tie the game.
NC State returns to action Thursday, November 1 with its final home game of the regular season. The Wolfpack hosts Virginia in that contest, with streaming coverage provided by ESPN3. Fans can also follow Twitter updates from @PackMensSoccer and live stats on GoPack.com.
