College Park, Md. - NC State men’s soccer fell 2-1 on Friday night at No. 8 Maryland, after holding a lead for most of the first half thanks to Nick Surkamp’s eighth goal of the season.
Surkamp struck early for the Wolfpack (7-5-4, 2-5-3 ACC), scoring in the seventh minute off of a free kick, earning assists for Gbenge Makinde and Michael Bajza. Surkamp entered the weekend ranked third in the ACC in goals.
“We’re disappointed that we gave up a lead. We allowed a goal early in the second half and we knew that we couldn’t afford to make mistakes like those in a tough environment against that level of competition,” said NC State head coach Kelly Findley. “Our job is to be prepared for Friday, to go to Carolina and get a result.”
Both sides landed three shots on goal over the course of the match, but Maryland (9-3-5, 6-1-3) found the back of the net twice to edge the Pack.
The Terps’ Sunny Jane scored on a left-footed volley from 12 yards on an assist from Alex Shinsky in the 43rd minute to knot the score 1-1 heading into the break. Patrick Mullins provided the game-winner in the 47th minute on a free kick from 25 yards.
State rallied to generate chances down the stretch, but was unable to find a late equalizer. Nazmi Albadawi, who entered the match with three goals and two assists in his last two contests, had a pair of shots in the second half, one saved and the other blocked by the Maryland back line.
NC State returns to action at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8 at North Carolina. Live stats for the match will be available on GoPack.com. Fans can also follow along on Twitter by following @PackMensSoccer.
