Men's Soccer Blanks Virginia Tech 2-0
Nov. 6, 2004
Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team defeating visiting Virginia Tech 2-0, in the Pack's final contest before next week's ACC Tournament. The Wolfpack (8-7-2, 2-4-1 ACC) used two second half goals from junior Aaron King for the win on Senior Day at Method Road Soccer Stadium. The Wolfpack defense shutout the Hokies (9-9-1, 2-5 ACC), earning NC State its third consecutive shutout.
After a scoreless first half, in which NC State posted a 7-2 advantage in shots, the Pack's offense got going in the second frame. Aaron King was the benefactor from two crosses from the right wing into the penalty box for his team leading 10th and 11th goals of the season.
Both of King's goals started with junior Bryant Salter's work on the right wing. On the first goal, Salter dribbled into the Hokie penalty box, and slid the ball over to freshman Hugh Cronin. Cronin then quickly passed the ball over to King who netted his first goal at 54:43.
NC State would then go on to add an insurance goal in the 69th minute, the exact same way the first goal happened. Salter once again dribbled into the PK box, this time he slid a ball to King at the top of the 18-yard box, and King recorded the multi-goal game.
NC State got a strong performance from keeper Jorge Gonzalez who recorded five saves on the day for his sixth shutout this season. Senior Justin Branch also recorded a back save on the day, as he cleared a Virginia Tech shot off the goalline with just under eight minutes left to preserve the shutout. Fellow seniors Chris Catlett and Chiedu Chukwumah were also honored before the contest.
NC State will next play in the ACC Tournament starting next Wednesday at SAS Soccer Stadium. NC State's opponent and game time will be determined Sunday night.
