Men's Soccer Advances in ACC Tournament
Nov. 7, 2011
Chapel Hill, N.C. -
The NC State men's soccer advanced in the 2011 ACC Tournament on Monday afternoon, downing Virginia Tech 1-0 in Chapel Hill. The Wolfpack will play at No. 3 North Carolina tomorrow at 7 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
The first half saw minimal action towards both nets, as the Pack (7-10-2) held a slight 4-3 edge in shots in the first 45 minutes. Nazmi Albadawi's strike in the 11th minute was the lone shot on goal for either squad.
Senior Justin Willis tallied NC State's best scoreing opportunity of the first half, when he gathered an errant clearance and his shot glanced off the cross bar in the 34th minute of action.
The Pack's score came in the 60th minute. Freshman Matt Ingram had control of the ball in midfield, and found Ryan Metts on the right wing. Metts placed a cross on the ground into the Hokies penalty box, where Albadawi tapped it into the back of the net at the 59:25 mark for his team-leading ninth score of the season.
In the two games against Virginia Tech (4-13-2) this season, Albadawi has scored both game winning goals.
The Pack has now defeated Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament all four times the teams have squared off over the last six seasons. The Pack has also recorded at least one win in five of the last six ACC Tournaments.
NC State will return to action tomorrow night in the ACC Tournament, playing at North Carolina at 7 p.m.
