Men's Soccer Suits up for Scrimmage

Raleigh, N.C. – The NC State men’s soccer team got to go through a dress rehearsal before the 2006 season starting next weekend, as the Pack took the field Saturday morning for an intrasquad scrimmage. The Pack’s offense had a strong showing on the day with two goals for the White team, and multiple shots off the post or crossbar.

Junior El Hadj Cisse led the scoring, with two goals on the day. Moving from his midfield spot of the last two seasons, Cisse is moving up to forward and proved today to be a serious scoring threat. Cisse’s first goal started with sophomore Jack Weedon taking the ball down the right wing and finding freshman Alan Sanchez at the top of the 18-yard box. Sanchez quickly found Cisse who slotted the shot into the lower right corner. Cisse’s second goal came off a free kick from 25 yards out.

In addition to Cisse’s good showing on offense, freshmen Jorge Mora and Sanchez looked strong all day combining with senior Santiago Fusilier in the midfield. Junior Hugh Cronin and senior Haddon Kirk led a strong defensive effort, that saw freshman Orry Powers look strong on the back line as well.

NC State is in the middle of an intense battle for the starting goalkeeper position, as redshirt freshman Chris Widman and junior college transfer Tom DeStefano are each vying for the top spot. DeStefano was quite busy on the day going against the starting forwards and midfielders, and made no fewer than three diving saves on excellent scoring chances. Not to be outdone, Widman did not allow a goal today and made a strong save off a shot from freshman Ben Ward.

Two members of the Pack have missed the first week of practice in preparation from the MCAT. Seniors Kevin Averette and Rami Ghanayem are both looking to go to med school after their playing careers, and both were taking the MCAT this weekend.

The men’s soccer team will begin the 2006 season next weekend, facing St. Francis on Saturday, August 26 and then Hartford on Sunday, August 27 with both games at Method Road Soccer Stadium.
