Raleigh, N.C. The NC State men’s soccer team started its 2007 campaign in good fashion, as the Pack downed Valparaiso 2-1 in the first game of the Wolfpack Classic being held this weekend at Method Road Soccer Stadium. Sophomore Orry Powers put in the game winner in the 80th minute, in a game where the Pack dominated in the shot category, 18-6.
The Wolfpack (1-0) struck first for the first goal in the 16th minute. Sophomore Jorge Mora won the ball deep in the Pack’s defensive end, and played a through ball to senior Ernesto Di Laudo. Di Laudo got behind the defense, and scored off the breakaway at the 15:29 mark.
Valpo (0-1) would tie the contest up in the 25th minute. Adrian Ortiz took a long throw-in, which found the head of Oscar Lomeli for a flick-on to the back post. Mario Diaz then got his head onto the ball and netted the tying goal at the 24:07 mark.
The two teams went into the half tied at 1-1.
Just over three minutes into the second half, Valpo’s captain Tyler Pagano was issued his second yellow card of the game, and Valpo was forced to play the rest of the contest a man down.
After some back and forth play, NC State finally struck again for the eventual gamewinner. Junior Alberto Ramos fed a short pass to sophomore Alan Sanchez on the right wing. Sanchez then lofted a cross to far post of the Valpo goal, where Powers was waiting to head in his first career goal at the 79:18 mark.
The 2-1 score would hold up as NC State has now started the season 1-0 for the fourth time in the last five seasons.
NC State held a large advantage in the shot category all game, as NC State had 18 shots compared to Valpo’s six. Christopher Widman picked up the win in the goal for the Pack with three saves, while Valpo’s Ryan Schwarz finished with five saves.
The Wolfpack will return to action this Sunday afternoon, with its second game of the Wolfpack Classic. The Pack will face Delaware at 4:00 p.m. at Method Road.
