Men's Soccer Hosts No. 11 South Carolina Wednesday
Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men’s soccer team will take a break from ACC play, and host No. 11 South Carolina this Wednesday night at SAS Soccer Park Field #2 at 7:00 p.m. The field is located directly behind the stadium, and there is limited seating and fans are encouraged to bring folding chairs. The Wolfpack (3-4, 1-2 ACC) is in the midst of playing five straight ranked opponents, and six in the first nine games to start the season. The Gamecocks (6-1) are ranked No. 11 in this weeks NSCAA/adidas poll.
NC State will be looking to break a two game slide, after close losses to both No. 3 Virginia and No. 6 Maryland. The Pack made a change in goal before the last contest, as junior Tom DeStefano made his first start of the season and recorded nine saves at Maryland over the weekend. The offense will be looking to get back to the form it showed in the 3-1 No. 1 North Carolina. Freshman Alan Sanchez leads the squad with three goals, and junior El Hadj Cisse has notched two.
After dropping their first game of the season 4-3 against No. 5 Clemson, South Carolina has won six straight and outscored the opposition 12-3 in that span. Most recently, USC defeated Davidson 3-1 on Sunday. Mike Sambursky leads the potent offense with four goals and six assists thus far, and Mike Gustavson has played every minute in goal holding a GAA of 1.00.
The Wolfpack leads the overall series with South Carolina 7-6-1. The two teams last met during the 2002 season, when No. 14 USC defeated the Pack 2-1 in the Duke/adidas Classic. The last time the teams met in Raleigh was a 4-0 Gamecocks win in 1997, and the last time the Pack defeated USC was 2-1 in 1994.
NC State returns to ACC action this weekend when the Pack plays host to Clemson on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Method Road. The Tigers are currently ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA/adidas poll and No. 2 in Soccer America’s Poll.
