Raleigh, N.C. Visiting Radford used a goal in the first minute of the contest and a second with five seconds remaining to defeat the NC State men’s soccer team, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Method Road. After falling behind early, the Wolfpack (4-4-3) tied the score in the 70th minute, but just as the game was heading for overtime, the Highlanders (5-4) found the gamewinner as time was winding down.
Radford jumped on the scoreboard first just 45 seconds into the contest. James Leith took a deep throw-in and the ball rolled all the way across the field where Radford’s Davor Husadzinovic tucked the ball into the net.
The Highlanders would hold that lead until the 70th minute, when NC State scored off a throw-in of its own. Sophomore Daniel Fish’s long throw found classmate Alan Sanchez at the top of the 18-yard box. Sanchez pushed the ball over to junior Marianito Montero who scored his first career goal at the 69:59 mark.
NC State would almost score a second time, as both Sanchez and senior El Hadj Cisse hit the post. Sanchez’s came with about 20 minutes left, while Cisse’s was with just three minutes remaining.
Just as the game was headed to extra time, Radford would score the final goal for the road win. NC State had a free kick just inside the 50-yard line. The ball was played out quickly by the Radford defense, and led to a two-on-one break. Franklin Elimbi took the defender with him, and found Husadzinovic alone who tucked away his second goal of the contest with just five seconds left.
NC State held a slight advantage in the shot category, 14-12. The Pack’s Christopher Widman made four saves, while Radford’s Zach Roszel had five stops in the contest.
The Pack will be back in ACC action next weekend, as NC State travels to No. 1 Wake Forest Saturday night.
