#13 Men's Soccer Cruises by Centenary, 5-0
RALEIGH, N.C. – Behind five second-half goals, the 13th-ranked NC State men’s soccer team defeated visiting Centenary, 5-0, Tuesday night at Dail Soccer Field. After a scoreless first half, the Wolfpack (11-3-1) turned up the attack, and picked up the win over the Gents (3-13-1) to remain a perfect 9-0 versus non-conference foes this season.
Much of the first half was spent on the Gents side of the field, as NC State controlled possession throughout the first 45 minutes of play. The Pack held a 10-2 advantage in shots, and took seven corner kicks.
Senior Federico Nachmann had NC State’s best chance, when he ripped a shot off the post in the eighth minute. Classmate Amar Brkic also came close in the 35th minute, but his shot was cleared off the backline right before it was about to go into the Gents’ net.
NC State finally broke through in the 49th minute of play. After hitting the post for the second time in the game earlier in the half, Nachmann started the play with a pass to junior Chris Zuerner. Zuerner slotted a pass into senior Alan Sanchez in the penaly box, who would score the eventual gamewinner at the 48:39 mark.
Nachmann would also be the point-man for the Pack’s second tally, this time feeding senior Ronnie Bouemboue in the box, who then slipped a pass over to sophomore Kris Byrd for his fourth tally of the year at the 60:01 mark.
Byrd would return the favor, giving a pass to Sanchez who found Bouemboue in the box for his team-leading seventh goal at 71:18.
Brkic would round out the scoring for the Pack, notching a pair of goals late in the contest. Brkic’s first was a header off of a Lucas Carpenter cross at the 81:21 mark, followed by another header off a free kick from Bryan Booth at 88:11.
NC State would hold a huge 28-3 advantage in shots. The Pack’s Christopher Widman picked up his seventh shutout of the season.
NC State will return to ACC action this weekend, as the Pack will play host to Clemson Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Dail Soccer Field.
