RALEIGH, N.C. - The 35th-ranked N.C. State men’s tennis team completed action in the Wolfpack Invite by winning a perfect 10 of 10 singles matches against Elon on Sunday inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Junior Austin Powell, ranked 50th in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings of the year, upset No. 25 Cameron Silverman of Elon in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 5-6, 6-4.
“Austin has beaten him (Silverman) before, but ranking wise this was a big win,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “They are both inside the top 50. I thought Austin did a good job. Austin has worked hard every day since he got here. He just put himself in a position to have a good opportunity to win.”
No. 76 Robbie Mudge defeated Jordan Kaufman, 6-3, 6-2, while No. 83 Nick Horton edged Robert Lindgren, 6-4, 5-6, 6-4. Sophomore Thomas Weigel, listed 82nd in the ITA rankings, defeated Juan Madrid, 6-4, 6-4.
