Pack Ends Play at Illini Invitational

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The NC State men's tennis team concluded play on Sunday at the Illini Invitational, held in Fort Myers, Fla. The Wolfpack collected two wins in singles play and one in doubles play.
Dave Thomson and Sean Weber got the Pack off to a good start, knocking off Florent Diep and Michael Alford of Florida, 8-5. Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius fell to Billy Federhofer and Gordon Watson, 8-4. Freshman Trey Carter and senior Rafael Paez drooped their match to Stephane Piro and Luke Johnson, 8-2.
In singles action, sophomore Austin Powell defeated Jared Hiltzik of Illinois in straight sets 6-2, 6-4. Weber came up short in his match against Julian Childers, but forced the match into the tiebreaker before falling 7-6 (3), 6-7 (5), (10-7). Norenius stumbled against Brian Page 6-3, 6-3, while Thomson was tripped up against Ross Guignon 6-3, 6-1.
Mudge was involved in the second hard fought battle of the day, but made sure the Wolfpack came out victorious in this match as he defeated Illinois' Farris Gosea. The sophomore won the opening set 7-6, before dropping the second set 4-6. The Winston- Salem native won the tiebreaker 10-7 to seal the victory. Weigel fell to Bruno Abdelnour 7-6 (7), 7-5, and Carter stumbled against Stephen Hoh 4-6, 6-2, (10-5).
NC State will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 19, when it travels to University Park, Pa., to face the Penn State Nittany Lions. The match is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
