Men's Tennis Posts Two Victories on Saturday

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team began its 2014 dual season by picking up two victories on Saturday inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the wins, the Wolfpack starts the season with a 2-0 record.
“We showed a lot of mental toughness, a lot of maturity and a lot of professionalism,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “That was a pretty good performance by us today against a good UNC Greensboro team and a good NC Central team. Our guys were consistent in going out there and doing what they needed to do in order to be successful.”
All matches on Saturday were played under the new ITA experimental scoring format, battling to six-game sets in doubles with no-ad scoring and tiebreakers at 5-5. Singles play also featured no-ad scoring and tiebreakers at 5-5.
NC State 7, UNC Greensboro 0
NC State swept the doubles point and claimed all six singles matches, as the Wolfpack captured its 10th consecutive victory to open a season against UNC Greensboro, 7-0.
The junior pair of Austin Powell and Beck Bond captured the first match of the day in doubles at the No. 3 position. The pair utilized an early break against UNCG’s Jimmy Roueche and Nazhone Wilkins on their way to a 6-2 victory. Freshman Ian Dempster and junior Robbie Mudge were able to seal the doubles point for the Pack with a 6-2 win over UNCG’s Daniel Mack and Ahmet Sarioglu from the No. 2 position.
Mudge, ranked 76th in the ITA rankings, increased the NC State lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-1 straight set victory from the No. 3 position against Randy Philips, before Powell won his match over James Dougherty, 6-2, 6-4.
Playing in the first dual match of his NC State career, Horton sealed the team victory for the Wolfpack, as he cruised to a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Daniel Mack of the Spartans.
“As a team, we couldn’t have asked for a better start,” Horton said after competing in his first dual match at NC State. “I wasn’t as nervous as I thought I would be, I felt really good with the preparation coming into the season.”
Thomas Weigel earned a victory from the No. 1 position for the first time in his career, as he defeated Ahmet Sarioglu, 6-4, 6-5 (5). Bond was able to keep the momentum in State’s favor, as he claimed a 6-2, 6-1 victory from the No. 6 position, while Weber completed the shutout for the Pack with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Gaston Murray from the No. 5 position.

NC State 7, NC Central 0
State picked up its second victory of the day over NC Central, 7-0, to improve to 2-0 on the season.
The Pack easily captured the doubles point with victories from all three positions. The duo of Weber and Horton cruised to victory on court one against Daniil Gerasimov and William East, 6-0, while Dempster and Mudge clinched the doubles point with a 6-0 win against Stephen Charles-Donatien and Tamina Kienka at the No. 2 position.
At No. 3 doubles, Powell and Bond completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory over Fabrice George and Thomas Persico.
In singles, the Pack continued its strong play and won all six matches in straight sets. Mudge captured the first singles victory of the match with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Charles-Donatien at the No. 2 position. On court four, Horton defeated East, 6-2, 6-0, to increase State’s lead to 3-0.
“[Horton] did a real good job and played pretty consistently,” Choboy said. “He didn’t have a lot of highs and lows. He is a very good player and these type of situations are going to make him better and more tough.
A native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell moved his record to 14-6 for the season, as he sealed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-3 decision at the No. 3 position in the lineup.
Weigel picked up his second straight-set victory of the day from the top position in the lineup with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Gerasimov. Bond improved his record to 8-2 for the season after defeating George at the fifth position, 6-2, 6-1, while Weber capped the afternoon with a straight set victory against Thomas Persico, 6-4, 6-3.
