RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team improved its dual-match record to 2-0 on Monday with a tough 4-3 win against the 22nd-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.

"It was a team effort today because we had different guys step up and come through for us," said head coach Jon Choboy. "I think it was excellent because Indiana's a very good team with a good mix of experience and they play at a really high level."

Indiana grabbed an early lead on the Wolfpack, after winning the doubles point to lead 1-0. Sophomore Robbie Mudge and freshman Thomas Weigel defeated Chris Essick and Dimitrije Tasic, 8-3. The Hoosiers won the other two doubles matches, as Isade Juneau and Josh MacTaggart defeated Dave Thomson and Sean Weber, 8-6, while Beck Bond and Austin Powell lost to Daniel Bednarczyk and Sam Monette, 8-0.

Heading into singles play, the Hoosiers held a slight 1-0 edge over the Pack and stretched its lead to 2-0 after winning the first singles match. Thomson came up short in a three set match to Juneau, 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Wolfpack rebounded and won the next three singles matches, as Mudge, Powell and Weigel collected victories. Mudge defeated Monette, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, while Powell won a tough match against MacTaggart, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Weigel topped Tasic, 6(4)-7, 6-3, 7-5.

"Our guys really showed a lot of competitive spirit and a lot of heart today," said Choboy. "That's what you can expect to see out of our guys, we're going to compete."

The Wolfpack led 3-2 heading into the last two matches of the evening. Weber fell to Bednarczyk, 6-2, 6-4, at the five spot in the lineup. Indiana tied the score at three with the win, setting up a winner take all match at the six spot. Freshman Simon Norenius defeated Elliott Yee in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to claim the victory for the Pack.

NC State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 25 at the ITA Kick Off in Oxford, Miss. The start time for the event has not been announced.
