Jan. 28, 2012
LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 57 NC State men's tennis team garnered a split in its two matches at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Kentucky's Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex by blanking No. 58 East Tennessee State 4-0 on Saturday morning in the site's consolation match.
A day after their team absorbed its first loss of the season, senior Dominic Hodgson and redshirt sophomore Matt Thomson won a hotly contested No. 2 doubles match over ETSU's Juan Ramirez and Jorge Varon with a 10-5 tiebreaker. Teammates Robbie Mudge and Jaime Pulgar also beat ETSU's Jeremy Bonnevalle and Roger Ordeig at No. 3 to give the Wolfpack the doubles point.
The Wolfpack (5-1) swept through the second, third and fourth singles matches to claim the victory over the Buccaneers. Hodgson won in straight sets over Jesus Bandres, 6-0, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, while Mudge, the freshman from Winston-Salem, took a 6-3, 6-4, victory over Ramirez in the No. 3 match. No. 100 ranked Austin Powell won in three sets over Bonnevalle.
Senior Jaime Pulgar was winning the No. 1 match, but it was discontinued with Pulgar leading 3-6, 7-6 (8), 4-3, in the third set.
"We bounced back pretty well and came out today and stepped up to the plate against a pretty good team," said NC State head coach Jon Choboy. "It was a good weekend of competition for us. We know some areas where we need to work to get better and that's what we will spend this week doing."
The Wolfpack returns home next Sunday to face Cornell at 10 a.m. and Charlotte at 4 p.m. at the Isenhour Tennis Center on the NC State campus. Admission is free for all spectators.
