Jan. 30, 2003
R.J. Murray won at No. 1 singles, and Jon Davis was victorious at the five seed but it wasn't enough for the Wolfpack as the Princeton Tigers defeated NC State 5-2 in men's tennis action Thursday night at the Raleigh Racquet Club. Murray, a sophomore from Clearwater, Fla., won 6-2, 7-6(2) over Princeton senior Trevor Smith and Davis defeated Hans Plukas 6-4, 6-4.
Freshmen duo Will Shaw and Jirou Nakajima picked up a decisive win at No. 3 doubles for the Wolfpack, 8-5, NC State could not pick up the doubles point as Davis and freshman Rehman Esmail fell 8-5 at No. 2 singles. Murray and freshman Val Banada could not win the third doubles match at No. 1, falling 9-7 after being up 7-5. Murray and Banada lost serve twice and dropped three match points.
"We didn't execute like we are capable of in doubles," head coach Jon Choboy remarked after his first match as NC State head coach. "Our margin of error this season is very small and we did not pick up our play when we needed to at times."
Choboy's team will travel to Indiana University on Saturday to take on the Hoosiers at 11:00am.
