Wolfpack Men's Tennis Edges Indiana, 4-3

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team captured its second consecutive victory over a Big Ten foe, as the Wolfpack came from behind to clip Indiana by a 4-3 margin Friday afternoon. The Wolfpack improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Hoosiers fall to 1-3 on the year.
State dropped its first doubles point of the season, as the Hoosiers claimed victories on courts one and three. At the top position of the lineup, the duo of Nick Horton and Sean Weber was defeated by Indiana’s tandem of Dimitrije Tasic and Sven Lalic, 6-2, while Austin Powell and Parker McGuiness dropped a 6-4 decision against Chris Assick and Stefan Lugonjic.
In singles, Indiana claimed the first match to increase its lead to 2-0, as Thomas Weigel dropped his match from the No. 2 position to Sam Monette, 6-3, 6-5 (4).
The Pack would answer by winning each of the next four matches to be completed to win the overall team match. Weber earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory in straight-sets against Lugonijc, while Mudge would tie the team score at two with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Tasic from the No. 3 position. Simon Norenius would give the Pack its first lead of the day on the team scoreboard after he earned a straight-set, 6-5, 6-1 win against Elliot Lee.
Playing his first match of the season from the top position of the singles lineup, Powell sealed the team victory for State, as he edged Lalic, 6-5, 6-5 (5). The win is his team-best 16th of the season, as he remains unbeaten in the dual season with a 4-0 record.
On court four, freshman Nick Horton was defeated in a decisive third set by Daniel Bednarczyk, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Up next, NC State will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a match against Michigan on Sunday, Feb. 2. First serve is set for noon.
