ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The 35th-ranked NC State men’s tennis team picked up its third consecutive victory over a Big Ten foe on Sunday, as the squad came from behind to defeat No. 26 Michigan, 4-3. The Wolfpack improves to 5-1 on the season, while the Wolverines fall to 3-2 for the season.

“I’m very proud of our guys today,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “ We played with a lot of heart, which we do all the time. We have a lot of things we can work on and get better at, but it was nice to come out and pick up a very good win over a very strong team.”

Michigan claimed the doubles point to open the match with wins on courts one and three. The junior pair of Austin Powell and Beck Bond dropped their match against Shaun Bernstein and Kevin Wong at the No. 3 position in a tiebreak, 6-3. The Pack then answered with a win at the No. 2 position, as the pair of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster edged Alex Petrone and Michael Zhu, 6-5 (3).

In the deciding match for the doubles point, the 19th-ranked tandem of Sean Weber and Nick Horton was outlasted by Alex Buzzi and Barrett Franks in a tiebreak from the No. 1 position of the lineup, 6-5 (5).

Mudge claimed the first match in singles action to quickly tie the team score at one, as he earned a 6-3, 6-0 straight-set victory against Michigan’s Justin Rossi.

A few moments later, Weber gave the Wolfpack its first lead of the day from the fifth position in the lineup with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Franks, before Buzzi of the Wolverines would defeat Horton, 6-1, 6-5 (3) at the fourth spot in the lineup.

The teams swapped victories in the next two matches to come off the courts. Simon Norenius posted his second straight victory of the dual season with a 6-5, 6-3 win against Zhu at the No. 6 position, while Michigan’s Petrone defeated Thomas Weigel in three sets on court two, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

The match was decided from the top position of the lineup, as Powell outlasted Vlad Stefan in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, to seal the team victory for the Wolfpack. With the win, Powell, a native of Muscle Shoals, Ala., remains undefeated in the dual season with a 5-0 record and owns a team-best 17 wins for the season.

“Austin [Powell] works extremely hard,” Choboy said. “He’s one of the hardest working tennis players that I’ve ever been around. He is so mentally tough each time he steps onto the court to compete. He is doing a good job of leading the team in a positive way.”

Up next, the Wolfpack will host VCU at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center at 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7.
