Men's Tennis Wins 4-3 Thriller Over Elon
Feb. 8, 2013
RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Thomas Weigel won a hard fought three-set match to clinch a 4-3 win for the 34th-ranked NC State Wolfpack against the Elon Phoenix on Friday at the Dail Tennis Stadium. The Pack dropped the doubles point, but won four of six singles matches to claim the win in its first outdoor contest of the season.
"We didn't play as well as we can play tonight, but Elon's a very good team and they had a lot to do with it," said head coach Jon Choboy. "For the most part, I think we've played well in all of our matches this season, but we didn't tonight, so i'm happy to come out with a win."
In doubles play, Robbie Mudge and Sean Weber fell to Elon's 22nd-ranked duo of Stefan Fortmann and Cameron Silverman, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot. The Phoenix claimed the doubles point after Robert Lindgren and Juan Madrid defeated State's Dave Thomson and Thomas Weigel, 8-4. Beck Bond and Austin Powell topped Jordan Kaufman and Brian Kowalski, 8-7 (7-5), at the three-spot in the lineup.
The Wolfpack quickly countered in singles play, claiming the first three wins to take a 3-1 lead, before Elon responded by winning the next two singles matches, knotting the score at three. As a result, Weigel and Lindgren found themselves in a winner-take-all match on court three.
Weigel lost the first set, 6-4, but won the second set 7-6 (6), after fighting back from a 4-1 deficit in the tiebreaker. The Germany native finished the job in the third set, winning 6-4 to give the Pack the win. The win improved Weigel's record to 13-7 on the season, which includes a 5-0 mark in dual matches. Fellow freshman Simon Norenius also remained undefeated in dual matches, improving his record to 4-0 by defeating Kowalski in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
"I thought Thomas (Weigel) really showed a lot of toughness in his match," said Choboy. "He competed throughout his match and fought off a few match-points. Simon (Norenius) came out and played very smart and kept his composure to keep his opponent from winning a game."
Weber and Bond also collected victories for the Pack while playing at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots in the lineup, respectively. Weber proved to be too much for Kaufman, winning in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3. Bond defeated Juan Madrid, 6-3, 6-4, collecting his second win in dual-match play. State came up short in its other two matches, as Mudge fell to No. 21 Silverman, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, and Powell lost to No. 117 Fortmann, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.
NC State will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 10, when it travels to the University of South Carolina for a match at 2 p.m.
