NC State earned its fourth consecutive 4-3 victory of the season against No. 26 South Carolina in the first of two matches on Sunday.

“It’s always good to have a good crowd, as we had out there today,” said head coach Jon Choboy. “I think they really enjoyed that match, because they seemed to be really getting into it and our guys fed off of that energy.”

The Wolfpack started the afternoon by claiming the doubles point for the second straight match and the fifth time this season with wins from the No. 1 and No. 2 positions in the lineup. At the No. 2 position, the 19th-ranked duo of Nick Horton and Sean Weber defeated No. 24 Chip Cox and Kyle Koch of South Carolina, 8-5. As a team, State remains unbeaten from the No. 2 position in the doubles lineup, with a 7-0 record for the dual season. Moments later, the team of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster sealed the doubles point for State with an 8-2 victory against USC’s Tstevan Mihav and Thiago Pinheiro from the top position.

Beck Bond and Austin Powell were leading the tandem of Andrew Adams and Andrew Schafer at the No. 3 spot, 7-3, before the match was left unfinished.

In singles, South Carolina won the first match to tie the team score at 1-1, as Pinheiro defeated Thomas Weigel, 6-4, 6-2 on court three. However, State would quickly answer to take a 2-1 lead, as Powell captured a victory from the No. 1 position of the lineup against No. 41 Mihov, 7-5, 6-4. At the No. 4 position, Adams answered to tie the team score once more for South Carolina, as he captured a 6-3, 6-3 win over Horton.

At the No. 5 position of the lineup, Weber cruised past South Carolina’s Chip Cox in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. The win for Weber is his sixth of the dual season and 15th overall.

In a back-and-forth match at the No. 2 position, Mudge outlasted USC’s Koch, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (2), to seal the team victory for State. The Winston-Salem, N.C., native now owns a 5-1 record for the spring season and owns 16 victories overall.

“That was a crazy environment,”Mudge said. “I was listening to the fans get behind me. That was the loudest match I have ever been a part  of in here, which was really cool. It helped me get a win.”

At the No. 6 position, Simon Norenius was edged in his match against No. 91 Andrew Schafer, 6-4, 6-7 (4), 1-0 (9).
