COLUMBIA, S.C. - The 34th-ranked NC State men's tennis team suffered a tough 4-3 loss to No. 49 South Carolina, on Sunday at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Wolfpack won the doubles point, but the Gamecocks won four of six singles matches.

"I'm disappointed that we lost, but we came out with really good energy in doubles play and took care of business," said head coach Jon Choboy. "We were in position to win a few more matches in singles, but we didn't close matches today as well as we have been."

Dave Thomson and Sean Weber completed the first match in doubles play, defeating South Carolina's duo of Chris Cox and Tsvetan Mihov, 8-2, at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius followed suit at the No. 3 spot, topping Ben Barnette and Thiago Pinheiro, 8-5, to clinch the doubles point for the Wolfpack. Beck Bond and Austin Powell were tied with Kyle Koch and Harry Menzies, 7-7, and the match went unfinished.

"All three of our doubles teams played really well," said Choboy.

The Gamecocks won the first two singles matches to take the lead, 2-1. Mudge fell to Mihov, 6-1, 6-3, and Weber lost to Koch, 6-2, 6-2. Powell collected a victory for the Pack at the No. 2 spot to even the score at two. The sophomore defeated Cox in straight sets, winning the first set 7-6 (5), before claiming the second set, 6-0.

Bond remained undefeated on the season with his win at the No. 6 spot against Menzies. The Meriden, Conn., native dropped the first set, 6-3, but rebounded to win the second and third sets, 7-5, 6-4. Bond's win regained the lead for the Wolfpack, 3-2.

State came up short in the final two matches of the evening, as South Carolina won the matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots to claim the win. Norenius suffered his first loss of the season in dual matches to Andrew Adams, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, while Thomson fell short against Pinheiro, 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4.

"We have to learn from this and go back to work to get better," Choboy added.

NC State will return to action on Friday, Feb. 15, when it travels to William & Mary for a 4 p.m. match.
